Belly putters can help golfers who don’t feel confident about keeping their wrists and hands from twisting during the putting stroke. The belly putter shaft is longer so that you can anchor the end of the belly putter grip right in the center of your body line. Your putting grip should stay the same. Your posture should stay the same too.

Belly putters work better for some people because there is less of a chance that you will push or pull the putterhead off line either going back or coming forward in the putting stroke.

Will I have To Change My Posture With a Belly Putter?

No. You can get a belly putter shaft that is long enough to touch your midsection without being so long as to force you to putt from a more upright stance. Belly putter shafts range from about 38 – 48 inches so you can get the right length for you. The photo below shows that Sergio Garcia putts with the same posture with his belly putter as he did with is conventional putter.

What Is the Proper Belly Putter Technique?

The best putting stroke mimics a pendulum whether or not you are using a belly putter. You do lose a little “feel” with the belly putter so because the belly putter shaft is somewhat attached to your midsection some golfers have a tendency to rock their body during the putting stroke.

Golfing Tips: Belly Putter Techniques

When Fred Couples switched to a belly putter he had to overcome this tendency.

Which Are the Best Belly Putters?

The Ping belly putter and the Odyssey belly putter are probably the two best selling brands. The Odyssey White Hot XG 2-Ball Mid Putter has that famous Osyssey two-ball alignment system that so many people seem to like, and it is reasonably priced at under $120.

Proper belly putter length is the critical issue, even before brand names or style. To measure for proper belly putter shaft length assume your normal putting posture at address. Have somebody measure from your belly button to a specific spot on the ground about 9-10 inches from your toes. Read the tape measure and that is the length of the belly putter you need. Do the measuring several times and average out the results.

The tee boxes on most American golf courses set up so that your approach shot on the majority of the par 4s on the golf course will be from around 150 yards. The approach shot is your last full swing to the green. The goal on every approach shot is to make your next club your putter.

Here are couple general rules about approach shots.

1. Pick a club that will fly to the middle of the green and make the middle of the green your target. If you have anything other than a wedge in your hand that you have practiced with enough to know the distance that it will fly within a couple yards and can take a full swing from a perfect lie, going for the pin is almost always the wrong choice. From the middle of the green you can two putt, at worse, and take the par. A miss left or right usually means adding at least one more stroke to your score for the hole.

2. Focus on alignment not distance. Choose a club that you can make a full swing with and the distance issue takes care of itself.

Alignment is the key to improving your approach shots and getting on more greens in regulation. Most golfers find it easier to align themselves properly when they walk to their stance from behind the ball. Those few extra steps give you a little more perspective and make you a little more conscious of the necessity of aligning your feet and your shoulders correctly. When you go to the range stop just banging balls trying to get a feel for the big swing. Practice your alignment too on every swing and it will become natural for you to do the same on the golf course.

Proper alignment is covered in more detail in the Simple Swing but the fundamental take away is that you want your shoulders squared and parallel to the target line and not pointing directly at the flag.

Most greens are deep enough front to back that if you fly the ball to the middle of the green even with a low spin ball that you will still be putting on your next stroke. If you start off already misaligned left and pull the shot, or start off misaligned right and push it then your next shot is either going to be from a bunker or from the waste area off the side of the green. Both of these situations increase the probability of a big number.

Practice your alignment until you do it perfectly and naturally every time. It does not take any special golfing skill to align properly and it will almost automatically improve the accuracy of your approach shots and lower your score if you do.

According to the National Golf Foundation, an industry research service, the average 18 hole score for the average golfer has not changed for decades and remains at about 108. That the average golf score is not declining remains a mystery to many people in the profession. It is not a mystery to the author of the putting drills book.

If you include yourself in the average golfer category and you desperately do want to break 100 on a consistent basis, the answer is not getting the latest and greatest $500 driver or even another putter. The fastest way to break 100 is to stop 3 putting.

Americans spend close to five billion dollars a year on golf equipment. A good deal of that going towards $500 drivers and $200 putters. There are 26 million golfers in America and every survey confirms the same thing, that despite the national statistics every individual golfer believes that his own golf game is getting better. Consumer marketing research people know what’s going on. Golfing equipment consumers will self-assess their performance based on the amount of money they spend for equipment. If they spend $500 on a driver then they automatically have become a better driver. They may still be whacking the ball out of bounds, but it’s going out of bounds further down range.

The fastest way to break 100 is to stop 3 putting.

If you really are the average golfer then you probably three putt from 8 – 10 times a round. Do the math.

Everybody wants to be the big hitter off the tee. That will never change until the day that testosterone is banned from golf courses. So go ahead and pound away and nobody is going to try to talk you out of it. But if you are serious about lowering your golf score have you ever a taken putting lesson from the Pro or somebody else who really knew how to putt? Have you ever gone to the practice facility and just spent the day with your putter and never picked up the big club?

A proven way to stop 3 putting is a click away

If you really want to eliminate your three putts and break 100 every time you go out I recommend Scott Meyers’ ebook Breakthrough Putting Secrets Revealed. It’s the number one best-selling book about putting on the Internet, and for good reason. People buy it, and they go to golfing forums and talk it up because it helped them out so much. You would have to be crazy to let this little secret slip out to the other guys in your regular foursome until you’ve gotten your money for every skin back and then some. They will start asking questions.

I am confident the book will help you too because it addresses the most common faults and gives you simple solutions to correct them. Once you can identify the problem that has been preventing you from being a good putter the actual fix is usually pretty simple. Most golfers are not good, consistent putters because they never learned how to putt the right way. To help reinforce your new skills the book includes drills you can practice at home or at the office.

It doesn’t matter if you’re a man or woman, young or old, right on left handed Breakthrough Putting Secrets Revealed will make you a better putter.

It’s guaranteed or your money back – and you keep the book

Scott Meyers is so confident that you’ll become a better putter that you get a rock-solid 60 day money-back guarantee. If your score is not dropping the first time after you read the book and put it into practice you can get all your money-back and still keep the book.

This lesson is entitled, “How to Maximize your Distance by Hitting Triples instead of Home Runs ” and it’s a great overall theory to build your entire swing around. Keep this in the back of your head at all times while you are on the course, and remind yourself of it before every shot. The result will be increased distance and straighter shots because you’ll be releasing your hands through the ball better.

Background Info :

Many recreational golfers struggle with slices, blocks, and inconsistency because they don’t know how to release their hands through the ball correctly. By “releasing your hands through the ball”, I am describing the act of maximizing your club head speed at the moment of impact, and eliminating the “outside-in” movement that creates a slice.

How You Will Benefit:

 1. You’ll learn an easy way of “getting your hands through the ball”
2. You’ll be increasing the speed of the club head through the impact zone
3. You will ensure that the club head is square at impact (which will drastically reduce any slice that you have)

What To Do:

Step 1: Create the “X”

This means that on the follow through, you need to focus on making your forearms cross. This will ensure that your hands have released through the ball correctly. Here’s an illustration of what I am talking about.

Notice the “X” that is created after impact and where the shaft of the club is pointed. Practice getting in this position. Practice creating that “X” after impact.

It will be easy to understand the alternative by paying attention to where the club is pointed, which I will explain in the next step.

Step 2: Finish at Third Base

Focus on pointing the club down the third base line on your follow through. In relation to where my feet are pointed in the picture at left, the club is pointed down the third base line. This is what we want.

Many golfers finish their swing with the club straight up in the air, or even pointed down the first base line in relation to their feet. Try that once, and you will feel the extreme “outside-in” movement that produces a slice. This is nothing more than a habit that can be easily broken. The Simple Golf Swing goes over this step in much more detail.

Summary:

So when you are on the tee next time, focus on just 2 things. Make the “X” and “finish at third”. That’s it. Swinging easy should already be grooved into your swing from the last tip I sent. Focus on these 2 tips, and you should be on your way to consistently staying out of trouble with your driver, which is the first step to scoring better.

Next Lesson: Approach Shots: What it takes to master them

This is the first of 10 golf swing lessons from golf instructor and author David Nevogt about how to lower your score. This series was designed in response to a ton of questions about the best way for the average golfer to go about lowering a handicap or shooting lower golf scores.

Lower Golf Score Tip #1 – Stay Out Of Trouble With Your Driver

Starting with your next round of golf keep a record of the number of fairways that you hit in the round. Count only the par 4s and the par 5s. It’s OK to cut yourself a little slack and count a ball that rolls off the short grass and into the first cut of rough as a fairway hit if you end up with a normal swing at the ball. You can get more strict with yourself later on.

Nobody is saying right now that by incorporating a couple simple tips that you are going to eliminate the slice that you have been hitting into the rough for the past 25 years. The same applies if you’re hitting a bad hook or if you are just plain inconsistent of the tee. The good news is that by incorporating these two tips that you will reduce your slice or hook putting your drive into in the fairway more often.

1. Swing Easy. Nothing could be better for your driving game than learning how to swing the big club more fluidly, if you go to the range and concentrate only on swinging easy it will revolutionize your ability to position yourself for a good approach shot when you get back on the course. You’ll make more consistent impact with the sweet spot on the ball and it will reduce the amount of side spin that turns a little off-direction on your drive into a recovery shot instead of a greenie attempt. I know you have heard this before but I am willing to bet that you have never actually practiced it for a week. If you can’t get out on the range then take a club and swing in the yard with the same thought of being more fluid. I am purposely mixing the words easy and fluid because that is what a good golf swing feels like. Start off your practice sessions by consciously relaxing your hands while gripping the club. Just doing this will reduce the muscular tension in your forearms and shoulders and make you feel like you are swinging easier.

2. Switch to a low spin ball. Golf ball technology is for real. Manufactures really can control the amount of spin of the ball off the driver head and the 8 iron. If you play with a low spin ball regardless of whether your ball goes left or right naturally it will travel less far left or right and allow you to hit more fairways. Low spin golf balls include the Titleist DT Solo, the Maxfli Noodle, and the Precept Laddie. These are mid priced balls and you can usually find them online and in the big sporting goods stores priced anywhere from $13-$20 per dozen. All major golf ball manufacturers make low spin balls. If the box does not say low spin then look for distance balls. Lower spin off the driver means less left and right movement and usually longer drives because the ball is not trying to lift like an airplane wing.

I know this sounds oversimplified and maybe you have even heard it all before, but it’s not. Switch to a low spin ball and swing easier or more fluidly by practicing with a more relaxed grip. When you get to the range this week think only of swinging easier or more fluidly, whichever registers the best in your brain. Incorporate these tips into your next round. In the next golf swing lesson we will cover how to get more distance with your driver.

If you love golf as much as the people I know, an indoor putting green would make not only a good investment, but a fun way to sharpen your golf skills. Putting mats come in various lengths and widths with some extending as long as fifteen feet. They include many different features such as incline, smooth surface, sand traps, non-skid backs, and cups. Most do not require batteries or electricity unless you choose to go with a more expensive model that will provide you with more “bells and whistles.” Although, there are some very reasonably priced models (around $50.00) that include a battery operated automated kick back putting cup.

Whatever model of putting mats you choose to go with, it certainly will improve your golf game and offer you hours of entertainment and skill building. A putting mat can be rolled up into the bag that comes with it and taken just about anywhere. You can practice both at home or in the office; you can even take putting mats along on vacation. Even if a few rounds of golf is on your vacation agenda, you can use your putting mat if it rains or in between rounds of golf.

Another great feature that will make owning a putting mat a good investment is that many offer a continuous return. So whether you make the putt or miss it, the ball will return to you automatically. Some brands also offer more than one putting cup which will allow you to practice not only in a straight line, but you can practice a curved putt as well. If you choose a model that has a smaller than regulation size cup, it will help the cup look bigger on the golf course which in turn could help you make more putts. Many putting mats are even stable enough to walk on. So whatever style you choose to go with, putting mats are a great investment!

After doing much research I decided to go with the Callaway 8′ Quad Net from Amazon. The price was a little more than I originally wanted to spend, but you definitely get what you pay for with this item.

This net is as close as you can get to instant set up. Just take it out of the provided Callaway bag, lay it flat on the ground and insert the 5 small stakes through each loop. Next you place one pole on each side. That is it! I haven’t taken it down yet, but the directions look fairly easy as well.

Some other reasons I bought this from Amazon: (1)[..]cheaper than Dicks Sporting Goods, Edwin Watts and other golf retailers. (2) No Tax (3) Free Shipping. Saved me approx [..]. going to a retail store!

Once again, if you are looking for a high quality net go with the Callaway 8′ Quad. It is money well spent if you are looking to improve your golf game. Plus it is great for the whole family!

I set up a mini driving range in my garage… A net, a regular mat with tee. I wanted to practice hitting out of the rough. Its a great little unit…but it sheds…little green plastic grass all around the mat..eventually, there will be no more grass..BUT….for the money..its dynamite…
