If you love golf as much as the people I know, an indoor putting green would make not only a good investment, but a fun way to sharpen your golf skills. Putting mats come in various lengths and widths with some extending as long as fifteen feet. They include many different features such as incline, smooth surface, sand traps, non-skid backs, and cups. Most do not require batteries or electricity unless you choose to go with a more expensive model that will provide you with more “bells and whistles.” Although, there are some very reasonably priced models (around $50.00) that include a battery operated automated kick back putting cup.

Whatever model of putting mats you choose to go with, it certainly will improve your golf game and offer you hours of entertainment and skill building. A putting mat can be rolled up into the bag that comes with it and taken just about anywhere. You can practice both at home or in the office; you can even take putting mats along on vacation. Even if a few rounds of golf is on your vacation agenda, you can use your putting mat if it rains or in between rounds of golf.

Another great feature that will make owning a putting mat a good investment is that many offer a continuous return. So whether you make the putt or miss it, the ball will return to you automatically. Some brands also offer more than one putting cup which will allow you to practice not only in a straight line, but you can practice a curved putt as well. If you choose a model that has a smaller than regulation size cup, it will help the cup look bigger on the golf course which in turn could help you make more putts. Many putting mats are even stable enough to walk on. So whatever style you choose to go with, putting mats are a great investment!

After doing much research I decided to go with the Callaway 8′ Quad Net from Amazon. The price was a little more than I originally wanted to spend, but you definitely get what you pay for with this item.

This net is as close as you can get to instant set up. Just take it out of the provided Callaway bag, lay it flat on the ground and insert the 5 small stakes through each loop. Next you place one pole on each side. That is it! I haven’t taken it down yet, but the directions look fairly easy as well.

Some other reasons I bought this from Amazon: (1)[..]cheaper than Dicks Sporting Goods, Edwin Watts and other golf retailers. (2) No Tax (3) Free Shipping. Saved me approx [..]. going to a retail store!

Once again, if you are looking for a high quality net go with the Callaway 8′ Quad. It is money well spent if you are looking to improve your golf game. Plus it is great for the whole family!

I bought this for my daughter’s boyfriend since he loves golfing. He lives in a small city apartment and I thought this would be good for putting practice, but not take up too much room. He’s says it’s OK, but more of a novelty item than a real practice mat because the jigsaw puzzle-like pieces don’t fit together well and he can’t get a smooth putt.

Decent putting green – but, not a good value August 19, 2009
GrayD (Wayne, PA USA)

I bought the 9′ putting green for a little less than $300 from sports authority. the few reviews that i read said Tour Links was either the best or very good. having set it up and used it for a bit, i would not say it is worth $300.

first off, i wanted a flat putting green with a hole that actually dropped down. having some ability to change the break would be nice but that wasn’t a critical point for me. some of the other putting greens would elevate the hole end by sloping upwards. other putting greens had a little ring that held the ball. and finally, i saw a mat on ebay that had a sloped wedge with a hole in it. the other methods of representing the hole weren’t satisfactory to me for various reasons. this putting green was the only pre-made system that basically elevated the whole green so the ball could drop down.

the 9′ putting green comes with a set of rigid plastic bases that sort of click together (may take some effort and help from another person). the “mat” came rolled up and it is basically a thin mat that rests on top of the bases. no method of attachment was evident and i guess it is designed that way. it did seem a little short, but the manual said that under heat (sunlight), it would expand. it did curl up at first at the end, but i guess that it would eventually lay flat. the standing part of the set is not attached to the main putting green and is meant to slide to wherever you’d like.

i have to say that the mat was kind of disappointing. it is really just a thin piece of fake turf (1/4″ish thick). i thought it would have some sort of cushion or pad underneath, but it doesn’t. also, b/c it isn’t taped down, it slips a little if you walk on it. i’m hoping that it is at least made to last and won’t fray or come apart like some other cheap putting mats. after it settles down some more, i may use some velcro tape to hold it down, but maybe it’s meant to expand/contract a little – especially if you want to leave it outside. i’m keeping mine inside in the basement so that’s not something i’m too concerned about.

it also comes with two clip on attachments that hold the string to guide your ball, two pieces of slope adjusting pads that you can place under the mat, a plastic straight bar that you can use to align your putts, a hole reducer ring, a flag pin with ball lift, a sharpie pen and stickers to put on various parts of the set.

setting it up literally took 10 minutes. very easy setup and i was putting right away. construction seems solid and i’m not a small person and i could walk on it w/out any flex or bounce. the ball rolls fine on it and i don’t have a stimpmeter or anything, but it felt like a real greens. and i guess that’s the most important thing.

–
this is definitely a better set than the $50 carpets you can get at the local sports store. they include the 3′x9′ kidney shaped pads, the izzo pad, the callaway pad… all feel cheap. but, is it $300 better? i don’t think it is so i can’t recommend it wholeheartedly.

another option i saw was birdieball’s foam pad putting green that costs much less. i didn’t like the idea of a foam though nor the ring holes. i mean, i’d like to try to replicate the actually greens as much as possible and the pale blue foam pad seemed to be too distracting.

i also saw bulk putting green mats on ebay for under $100 that seemed decent. if i were more of a do-it-yourselfer, i’d have bought that, built a base to elevate it and cut out holes… the key word is “if” so i didn’t go for that. (maybe in the future)

so, if price really isn’t an issue, and you’re lazy like me, go for it. it’s a pretty decent set to practice your putts.

Skipping the warm up makes us susceptible to poor results and risk of injury. Stop with the excuses; everyone can find at least five minutes to warm up before the first tee.

If you are running late, simply take your sand wedge and make 8 to 10 slow motion practice swings increasing the length and pace of each practice swing.

Before you stretch, warm up with 10 minutes of walking or another light activity. Then prepare your muscles for golf by completing the series of golf stretches described in this slide show. Hold each stretch for 10 seconds. Repeat three to five times. Do one set of golf stretches every day and another set before and after each round of golf.
