Belly Putters Keep It On Line
Belly putters can help golfers who don’t feel confident about keeping their wrists and hands from twisting during the putting stroke. The belly putter shaft is longer so that you can anchor the end of the belly putter grip right in the center of your body line. Your putting grip should stay the same. Your posture should stay the same too.
Belly putters work better for some people because there is less of a chance that you will push or pull the putterhead off line either going back or coming forward in the putting stroke.
Will I have To Change My Posture With a Belly Putter?
No. You can get a belly putter shaft that is long enough to touch your midsection without being so long as to force you to putt from a more upright stance. The best putting stroke mimics a pendulum whether or not you are using a belly putter. You do lose a little “feel” with the belly putter so because the belly putter shaft is somewhat attached to your midsection some golfers have a tendency to rock their body during the putting stroke.

The Ping belly putter and the Odyssey belly putter are probably the two best selling brands. The Odyssey White Hot XG 2-Ball Mid Putter has that famous Osyssey two-ball alignment system that so many people seem to like, and it is reasonably priced at under $120.
Proper belly putter length is the critical issue, even before brand names or style. To measure for proper belly putter shaft length assume your normal putting posture at address. Have somebody measure from your belly button to a specific spot on the ground about 9-10 inches from your toes. Read the tape measure and that is the length of the belly putter you need. Do the measuring several times and average out the results.
